Paris and William help me reminisce about our time at the Mating Habits of the Modern Otaku panel this past Animazement 2013. William helped Alpha Counter’s Sean Ryan and me host the panel, while Paris circulated among the crowd and took questions for the Q&A segment. Also, we’ve included the audio from the actual panel! Listen to all of the great questions we got from the audience, and check out the video at our new YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/MatingHabitsVideo

Ep.21 – Stardate -301698.2: The Rules According to Trek

Benedict poster star trek

http://traffic.libsyn.com/matinghabitsofthemoderngeek/Ep421_MHMG.mp3

William and I rush to the studio after watching Star Trek: Into Darkness to podcast our nacelles off about Trekkie dating sites, using the Trek Movie Titles as a cheat sheet to dating, and review the shit out of Star Trek: Into Darkness – SPOILER ALERT! There’s so much coat porn in this movie – so many great fashions!

We have a quick, imaginary shipper wars between Benedict Cumberbatch and Kelley Hightower Cumberbatch, and then William and I flip the same table over those people who get wild in movie theaters and talk and yell through the whole movie. There is a special hell…

The Rule According to Trek

The Motion Picture: Get motivated, be proactive, and get out there!

Wrath of “Con”: Cons are a great way to meet like-minded folks, just remember to be respectful.

The Search for Spock: Look for your own species in places where you would go; game stores, meet-ups, bookstores, conventions, online dating sites.

The Journey Home: Kicking rocks and awkward transitions; how to get them back to your place for sexy make-out times.

The Undiscovered Country: Sex; it’s the most complicated thing you’ll ever love doing.

The Final Frontier: Commitment; it’s tough, but what you’re ultimately looking for.

Generations: Age differences can be an issue, especially of she doesn’t remember Thundercats.

First Contact: Making the effort to get along with your SO’s friends and family.

Insurrection: Resolving Conflict; the right way to argue and not break up.

Nemesis: You broke up, how to still be friends, or at least civil to one another.

Star Trek – Lens Flare Reboot!: When all else fails, re-invent yourself. You’re still you, only shinier!

Ep. 17 – The Break-up Break Down – Take Your XP and Level Up!

http://traffic.libsyn.com/matinghabitsofthemoderngeek/Ep417_MHMG.mp3

Break-ups are the absolute worst, but never fear – William and I are here to help you get through it with the first episode of Cycle 4!

We discuss different types of break-ups, ways of distracting yourself from the heartache, and how to sally forth and find the next love of your life. We also introduce two new recurring segments to the show, one where we examine a famous fictional relationship and one where we flip tables over something that has us riled up.

The person you fall in love with isn’t necessarily the person you break up with, and remember: You’re not broken, your heart is, so grow from rejection and join in on the fun!

NB – William and I are aware that while most of Europe uses the Euro, England, in fact, uses the Pound. We’re worldly and all that – save your correction emails for something else. 😉

Episode 12 – Geeks Dating Non-Geeks: Interspecies Relations

Cycle 3 is here!

And we’re back with William to dicuss the phenomenon of Geeks and Non-Geeks, living together, mass hysteria.

Ghostbusters? Anyone? Ahem…

Prompted by a podcast listener who wanted to know how to break into the geek scene, we discuss how to approach a geek, how to respond to a geek’s approach, and why Muggles be trippin’.

As geekdom becomes more mainstream, non-geeks are starting to notice how much fun we’re having, and want to see what all the fuss is about. We encourage you to “Be an Ambassador to Your Fandom”, stop showing off, and be open to learning new things.

Oh, and non-geeks, we are trying. You have to give us a chance — nay, six chances to get a conversation right 🙂

Episode 10 – Online Dating: A Flowchart to Your Heart

In this episode, William returns with Sean Ryan of Alpha Counter and we assist William with the creation of his first OkCupid profile. We discuss the steps in creating the perfect profile, how to weed out what you don’t want, and why _taco is not a great profile user name. We give photo tips, talk shit about Fayetteville, and I share some of my old OkCupid messages that convinced me to go out on dates. So, stop lying about your height already and join in on the last episode of 2012!

PS – someone’s new screen name may be SharedNostalgia if one wanted to sign onto OkCupid and find out everything about a certain co-host…

Episode 9 – An Inconvenient Truth: “Nice Guys” Do Finish Last

In this episode, William and I go on a rant worthy of 4Chan about that old trope: “The Nice Guy.” We discuss the phenomenon of self-friend-zoning, the Trophy Concept, how women are not achievements to be won through patience alone, and how, amazingly, people like being liked. We discuss why nerd-raging about how girls are shallow might be a waste of time…time that could better be spent being brave and letting her know you actually like her with words.

We also chat about a recent creepy convention story, why bullwhips are good for traversing crevasses, and how even small costumes can’t make a picture of your dick appropriate for showing during an introductory conversation.

So, it begins…

Welcome to what I hope will be a fun and informative journey, navigating the obstacles and challenges of dating in the Geek world to ultimately find your way to the relationship of your dreams.

In order to secure my position as the correct woman for this job, I’ll give you my Geek Resume – a CV of time spent earning my Bachelors of Science in TARDIS, followed by my PhD in Trek Studies.

My geek credentials are myriad — I mean, I just used the word, “Myriad,” — but if you need further proof, I’ll sum up things by saying I’m a Science Fiction/Fantasy RPG Gamer Geek who has played every type of game from Table-Top Warhammer Fantasy to Dungeons and Dragons 2-3.5 (I still contend that 4 was an empty, soulless attempt to ruin everything ever). I have logged hundreds of console hours playing Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Left 4 Dead, and Tenchu Z. I have emoted and RP-walked through weeks-worth of World of Warcraft and Star Wars, The Old Republic. This doesn’t even take into account the amount of time I’ve spent enjoying TV, Movies, Comics, and Novels that span the genres — let’s just say I’ve been Aiming to Misbehave ever since Han Solo shot first.

If you’ve read this far, I invite you to also consider my love history. I’ve been on dates…lots and lots of dates…like, a bunch of damn dates. Sprinkle in a smattering of long-term relationships, and you’ve got 20 years-worth of expectation, gratification, and rejection.

I have a lot of things to say about geeks dating other geeks, and I have the advice that many of you might need to get your foot in the door of the cranky neighbor known as “Love.”

This blog will be a companion piece to a podcast by the same name, available on iTunes – it’s free, so what do you have to lose?

I hope you’ll find it informative and inspiring – or at least funny. Feedback is my friend, so feel free to comment and ask questions, or follow me on Twitter @Kelleydisagrees and Direct Message me with anything and everything.

Buckle Up, because it’s about to get geekish.
